Gnome Appears In Front Of Mount St. Helens Camera - News Story - KIRO Seattle

The first sign that was noticed by many Web surfers on Tuesday said "I will get the snow."

Then, early Wednesday, a new message appeared: "No headway on the snow but could use some hot chocolate."

A while later, a styrofoam cup labeled "hot chocolate" appeared next to the gnome, along with an American flag. He seemed content for the moment.

But then, another peek at the Web cam around noon revealed the gnome was gone and all that remained was a small mound of snow.

Gnome Appears In Front Of Mount St. Helens Camera

TOUTLE, Wash. -- A gnome has mysteriously appeared in front of one of the cameras at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument in Toutle.

The gnome can be seen on what the monument’s Web site calls the VolcanoCam Classic. To the right of the gnome is a round sign that possibly reads, “I will get the snow,” but it is somewhat illegible.

The camera is located at the Johnston Ridge Observatory at an elevation of approximately 4,500 feet, about five miles from the volcano.

It is not known who is responsible for the gnome’s presence, but park officials said the area is accessible to anyone on skis.

Such pranks involving placing gnomes at various landmarks and then photographing them have been documented since the 1980s.

The image was spotted Tuesday afternoon on the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument's Web site.
