The Day The Earth Shook!

NHK WORLD English: "Ground near the epicenter moved more than 1 meter
Satellite images taken by a Japanese space agency show that the ground slid more than one meter near the epicenter of the devastating earthquake in China.

Japan's Geographical Survey Institute compared the images around Beichuan County about 140 kilometers northeast of the epicenter, before and after the quake.

The images were taken by the land observation satellite called Daichi.

Ground elevation or subsidence has occurred in an area stretching over 100 kilometers. The dislocations were concentrated in a band zone about 10 kilometers long on the edge of the Sichuan Basin. A fault line that caused the quake apparently exists under this zone.

Senior researcher Hiroshi Yarai says the massive ground movement near the fault may explain why the earthquake caused such major damage.

He said the satellite images have also confirmed that the fault line stretched northeast from the epicenter.
